Steven Day spent the summers of 2007-2009 making photographs at the late amuseument park Astroland (1962-2008). In 2009 he has been making photographs and videos ("Polar Express") in the remaining Coney Island satellite parks. He has made "Ghost Town" screenprints, based on his "black/white" photographs of the 1960's concession stand in Coney Island on Bowery and West 12th street. He also created Ghost Town 2008 (10 videos) working in collaboration with artist David Pushkin, camera work by Jack Cheairs, and Sound design by Ethan Gamache

"Ghost Town" goes beyond the social-documentary, and instead creates an environment (set in a gallery/museum) that draws from the experimental and alternative landscape of Coney's Islands early 20th century theme parks: Luna Park (1903-1944), Dreamland (1904-1911), and Steeplechase (1897-1964). The multi-media setting expands on the wild architectural, cultural, and economic rifts of Astroland.

"Ghost Town" was created upon the announcement that the Park would be sold and demolished as part of an urban renewal project”. A spokesman for the company said “…the developer won’t let Coney Island become a ghost town..."

"Ghost town" presents an inside view of the park, the rides, and people that flock to Coney Island every summer. It’s a very real environment that represents more than leisurely escape.
